⛵ By-the-Cabin charter pros & cons

Hi Reader,

In my last dispatch, I recapped the last-minute by-the-cabin charter we were invited to check out. Today, let's dive into the pros and cons of this type of voyage and whether it might be a good fit for you.

First a quick note on Hurricane Beryl. This powerful Category 4 hurricane took a direct hit on the Grenadines, a popular charter and cruising destination. In particular, the island of Carricaou, was hard hit by the eye of the storm. If you'd like to donate to the relief efforts, consider the GoFundMe organized by Rise Grenada and Spice Island Relief.

This storm later went on to hit Jamaica, Mexico, and the Yacht Warriors HQ here in Houston. We are still without power, but doing well otherwise!

What is a By-the-Cabin Charter?

Think of a by-the-cabin charter as a budget-friendly, crewed option for smaller crews of travelers. Here are some key facts about the charters offered by Dream Yacht:

  • Meals Included: You'll get three meals a day included, whipped up by a fabulous hostess. While it's not gourmet dining, our galley wizard did wonders with the provisions.
  • Not All-Inclusive: Unlike some luxury crewed charters, this isn’t a fully stocked galley. You'll need to cover some extras.
  • Fleet Maintenance: Dream Yacht has a mixed reputation for fleet upkeep. On our voyage, we faced some issues with the water maker, which cost us a few hours at marinas topping off tanks.
  • The Boat: We were on a 2019 Ipanema 58-foot Fontaine Pajot. Despite its age, it was shipshape. Newer models, like the Bali 5.4, are also available and I would recommend those over the Ipanema.

What else is included?

  • 🛌 Accommodation: Private cabins with en-suite bathrooms.
  • 👩‍✈️ Crew: A professional skipper and hostess/cook.
  • Beverages: Water, tea, coffee, and some local drinks. Wine is included at lunch and dinner, but otherwise, you can bring your own grog.
  • 🏄‍♂️ Water Sports: Snorkeling gear, paddleboards, and sometimes kayaks.

What's Not Included

  • ✈️ Travel Costs: Flights and transfers to the marina.
  • 🍹 Extra Beverages: Alcoholic beverages and soft drinks outside of meal times.
  • 🍴 Dining Ashore: Meals taken off the yacht.
  • Excursions: Optional land-based activities and tours.
  • 💰 Gratuities: Tips for the crew are not included.

Who Might Enjoy a By-the-Cabin Charter?

  • Budget-Conscious Travelers: Ideal for those looking for a more affordable way to experience a crewed yacht.
  • Small Crews: Perfect for couples, families, or friends who want a private cabin without chartering an entire yacht.
  • Young Sailors: Great for young adventurers looking to meet new mates and share the experience.
  • Solo Voyagers: Ideal for individuals who want to travel alone but enjoy the company of others.
  • Adventure Seekers: Those who enjoy a structured itinerary but still want the freedom to explore.

Pros of By-the-Cabin Charters

  • Cost-Efficient: For small crews, it's a more affordable way to enjoy a crewed yacht experience.
  • Great Itinerary: The float plan covers all the popular spots you'd want to visit on a maiden voyage to the BVI.
  • Less Responsibility: Families with young sailors might appreciate the limited crew duties. However, note that these trips are limited to ages 6 and up.

Cons of By-the-Cabin Charters

  • Shared Quarters: You don't get to choose your fellow shipmates, which means you might end up in close quarters with someone you don't get along with for a week.
  • Variable Maintenance: Fleet maintenance can be hit or miss, at least with the Dream Yacht Charter fleet. While we had a generally positive experience, others might encounter more significant issues.
  • Meal Quality: While the meals are included, don't expect high-end cuisine. Our hostess did her best with the budget, but it's not the same as having a private chef aboard a fully crewed charter.

Other Providers: If you’re looking for more options, by-the-cabin charters are also offered by Moorings and Navigare. These companies provide similar experiences, so you have plenty of choices when planning your adventure.

Overall, if you have a small crew and are looking for a cost-efficient way to set sail, a by-the-cabin charter can be a great option. Just be prepared for a few quirks and enjoy the adventure!

That's it for today!

Have a great week!

Hi Reader, I just got back from my very first trip to the USVI and BVI Crewed Charter Yacht Shows, and let me tell you—it was quite an experience! But before we dive into the highlights, I wanted to touch on a news items: First, a tragic reminder: late this past Friday, a dinghy captain lost his life in the channel between the BEYC and Saba Rock when his dinghy was T-boned by a speeding superyacht tender. While there's no excuse for the tender's reckless speed, it's a heartbreaking reminder...

Hi Reader, On this Veterans Day, I'm taking a moment to reflect on a journey that's been anything but linear. My service in the Marines taught me about resilience, camaraderie, and discovering peace in unexpected places. Maiwand, Afghanistan, circa 2010 While stationed at Camp Pendleton, Britney and I joined a sailing club, exploring the San Diego Bay between deployments. It was more than a pastime; it became a newfound passion that stayed with us. This eventually led us to the world of...

Hi Reader, The countdown has begun! The end of hurricane season is approaching, and the new charter season is upon us. As the weather moderates, excitement is in the air, and the anticipation for upcoming charters is building. It’s that time of year when you can almost hear the gentle lapping of waves against the hull and feel the warm breeze as you set sail. Now, you might be able to outrace me close-hauled up the Sir Francis Drake Channel, but after 12 years of chartering, we've certainly...
