⛵ Revisiting the Spanish Virgin Islands on a Bareboat Charter

Published over 1 year ago • 2 min read

Hi, it's Matt with the Yacht Warriors, the only newsletter that doesn't substitute your bacon provisioning order with turkey bacon.

Here's what's going on today:

  • I just returned from my latest yacht charter trip to the USVI and Spanish Virgin Islands...highlights below!
  • Is a bareboat charter in Hawaii possible?
  • With peak BVI charter season just around the corner, I put together the Yacht Warriors' BVI Beach Top 10 List
  • Anchorage of the month: Carlos Rosario, Culebra

November 2022 yacht charter trip

I just got back from a fantastic bareboat trip with Waypoints USVI in St. Thomas, USVI. This was my original plan in case you missed it.

I'll have a full trip report out soon and I just started posting about the trip on our Instagram account. In the meantime, here are a few highlights:

  • The fishing was good, but not great. I'll blame the abundance of sargassum and not the bananas! We did land a cero mackerel that made excellent sushi
  • We had to hunker down for about 36 hours while a developing tropical disturbance passed nearby. With strong winds out of the south for much of the trip, we had to abandon plans to sail to St. Croix
  • We loved visiting St. John, it was my first time. Maho Bay is one of my new favorite places, and Cruz Bay was a blast
  • The Spanish Virgin Islands continue to amaze me - quiet, stunningly beautiful, and remote

Hawaii bareboat charter?

I've always wanted to return to Kauai and sail the Napali Coast, one of the most spectacular settings I've ever visited. So can you do it on a bareboat charter?

The short answer is, no. But, it's for good reason.

  • The cruising conditions are challenging, presenting unique risks to skippers
  • There are few protected anchorages and marinas
  • As a result, bareboat charter yachts are just not available from any operators

If you want to learn more, I did a full write up about the unique sailing conditions and your charter options.

You can still pull this trip off via a crewed charter - there are several available. But, be ready to empty out that bank account - prices are much higher than a similar trip in the Caribbean.

The Yacht Warriors BVI beach Top 10 List

After much deliberation, this is our BVI Beach Top 10 List. Check out the full post for #1-5, and let me know what I got wrong!

6. Smuggler's Cove

7. Deadman's Bay

8. Cane Garden Bay

9. White Bay, Guana Island

10. Brewer's Bay

Anchorage of the month: Carlos Rosario

Hot off the presses! This is my drone shot at Carlos Rosario in Culebra from our recent trip. You'll find some of the best snorkeling I've experienced, right below your mooring. Another plus? Unobstructed epic sunset views to the west.

Hi Reader, Before we hoist sails on today's journey, let's navigate through a couple of recent news items: Last week the Baths bore witness to a charter grounding on the rocks amidst Red Flag conditions. This incident mirrors the lee shore grounding of the Hillbilly a few weeks ago. Takeaways: monitor weather resources vigilantly, respect Red Flag warnings, and steer clear of anchorages that test fate (lee shores). There have been recent reports of multiple stolen dinghies at JVD, BVI. Raise...

Hi Reader, Reports are in: the BVI is buzzing with activity, reaching its peak around the Easter weekend. As the Yacht Warriors crew gears up for our BVI next adventure next month aboard a Lagoon 51, I’m hopeful the crowds will thin a bit. Meanwhile, I kicked off the provisioning for our journey, stowing away those essential hot sauces that no sailing trip can do without. Matouk's and Marie Sharp's are my two favorite hot sauces Safety update: recent groundings in BVI A quick note on safety,...

Hi Reader, We just returned from an amazing land-based trip to St. Thomas for Spring Break. We stayed on the north shore, close to Magens Bay, and enjoyed wonderful vistas stretching all the way to the palm tree-lined shore of White Bay, Jost Van Dyke. Though our sea legs took a brief hiatus, our spirit for exploration remained as we ventured into locales beloved by bareboat charter crews. Here are the pearls of wisdom we unearthed during our visit that might help you on your next USVI or BVI...
