⛵ Need Summer Plans? How to Charter During Hurricane Season
Published about 1 year ago • 4 min read
Hi Reader,
It's been a busy few weeks, with many guests booking Yacht Warriors all-inclusive charters for spring getaways. There are still some great specials available - check out the latest offers here.
A special congratulations to two Yacht Warriors groups kicking off their BVI charters this week—both couples celebrating anniversary and engagement milestones.
A huge thanks to Julianna/Florian on Katlo and Anita/Jaden aboard Amajen for their dedication in preparing these charters. We carefully selected these two yachts in part for their expansive master suites, each spanning an entire hull, offering an unmatched level of comfort and luxury. Keep up with the action on Katloand Amajen's instagram accounts.
Both are offering incentives for bookings through July - reach out if you'd like more details.
The expansive flybridge on Katlo, a Bali 5.4. The soft decking is also a nice extra on this model.
The large master suite aboard Amajen, with dual, private access to the aft deck.
On the homefront, we’re just three months away from our next Exumas charter—our first time taking the kids aboard with another family. The excitement is building! We are also welcoming Celia aboard as our chef/stew. I had the pleasure of meeting her at the Exumas Charter Yacht Show a few weeks ago, and she’s a regular crew member aboard M Legacy - a brand-new 2024 Bali 4.8 available for all-inclusive charters in the Bahamas. You can follow her adventures on Instagram here.
Charter Destinations for the Summer
Still looking for summer vacation plans? Even though hurricane season quiets things down for charters in the popular Virgin Islands, it's still possible to arrange a yacht charter adventure. So which destinations would we recommend? Let's go through your options.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines
During the peak storm months, most crewed charter yachts from the Virgin Islands relocate south to the Grenadines and Grenada. These islands lie outside the primary hurricane belt, offering a safer and equally enchanting escape with steady trade winds, crystal-clear waters, and fewer crowds. While storms are still possible, the risk is lower.
This migration presents a unique opportunity for charterers: a wider selection of popular yachts, often at competitive pricing, becomes available in these southern waters. If you're considering a summer charter, the Grenadines offer a diverse and captivating experience. Here are some highlights to consider:
Island Hopping Adventure
The Grenadines comprise 32 enchanting islands and cays, each with its unique charm. From the lush landscapes of St. Vincent to the exclusive allure of Mustique, the possibilities for exploration are endless.
The stunning Tobago Cays
Pristine Beaches and Turquoise Waters
The islands boast soft white sand beaches and spectacular coral reefs. The Tobago Cays, a breathtakingly beautiful national park, offer outstanding snorkeling and diving opportunities. Jump into the crystal-clear waters to discover abundant marine life, including turtles and stingrays. A night under the stars in the marine park is an unforgettable experience.
Embarking on a charter in the Grenadines during hurricane season not only provides a safer sailing environment but also enriches your journey with diverse experiences, making it a compelling alternative to more frequented northern Caribbean destinations.
Secluded beaches in the Exuma Bahamas await
Bahamas
A small fleet of private crewed charters remains available in the Bahamas during hurricane season. While it’s a fantastic destination, there are a few things to consider. It can be hot, trade winds aren’t as strong, and there’s always the possibility of a tropical disturbance. However, for those looking for adventure, the Bahamas—especially the Exumas—deliver an unparalleled experience.
The Exumas might be my favorite yacht charter destination. Unlike other Caribbean regions, such as the British Virgin Islands, the Exumas have a completely unique character. That’s part of the reason we keep returning year after year. Check out a sample itinerary here for some inspiration.
Epic sunsets await you in the Bahamas
Why Charter in the Exumas?
Unbelievable shades of blue – Some of the prettiest water you'll find on this planet.
Protected sailing – The Exuma Bank is well-sheltered, allowing for comfortable upwind sailing.
Solitude – You can anchor almost every night by yourself if you wish.
Great fishing potential – The Exuma Sound drop is just a stone’s throw away in some places, offering world-class catches of wahoo, mahi-mahi, and tuna.
Sandbars – Ideal for cocktails, lunch, and swimming.
Logistics – Close to the U.S. mainland, with many direct flights
The friendly nurse sharks of Compass Cay
Highlights of an Exumas Yacht Charter
Hike to Boo Boo Hill in the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park for stunning 360-degree views.
Get your picture taken with the famous swimming pigs at Big Major Cay, then snorkel the iconic Thunderball Grotto.
Enjoy a locally famous Peanut Colada at Staniel Cay Yacht Club.
Catch deepwater pelagic fish just offshore in the Exuma Sound.
Ride the Sanctuary Creek mangrove river at Shroud Cay to the water slide and explore Camp Driftwood.
Pet the (usually) harmless nurse sharks at Compass Cay Marina.
If you’re looking for a summer charter, the Bahamas—especially the Exumas—should be high on your list.
The historic town of Dubrovnik, Croatia
Mediterranean (Greece & Croatia)
For those looking beyond the Caribbean, the Mediterranean offers an entirely different charter experience. Greece and Croatia are two of the most sought-after destinations, boasting stunning coastlines, historic charm, and incredible food. However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.
First, it can get hot, particularly in August and September. Secondly, this is peak season, meaning popular anchorages and towns can be busy. If you're set on a Mediterranean charter, planning well in advance is key to securing the best yachts and itineraries.
Highlights of a Mediterranean Charter
Greece: Sail through the Cyclades or Ionian Islands, discovering whitewashed villages, ancient ruins, and hidden beaches.
Croatia: Island-hop along the Dalmatian Coast, exploring medieval towns like Dubrovnik and Hvar while indulging in world-class seafood.
While different from the laid-back charm of the Caribbean, a Mediterranean charter delivers a blend of adventure, culture, and natural beauty—just be prepared for the summer crowds and heat!
One more exciting update—Emilia from our team, whom many of you have met, will be attending the East Med Multihull show in Greece next month. We’re looking forward to her firsthand insights and will report back with our top Yacht Warriors recommendations for some Mediterranean-based charters!

No matter where your summer travels take you, there's a yacht charter option to fit your style—whether it’s the secluded anchorages of the Grenadines, the vibrant waters of the Exumas, or the historic charm of the Mediterranean. Hi Reader, There’s a moment that happens on every yacht charter down to the British Virgin Islands. Usually it’s sometime on day one. The lines are off, the catamaran settles in, and you look around and think—yeah… this is exactly why we come back. I’ve been making that trip for 15 years now. Same chain of islands, a lot of the same anchorages, plenty of familiar stops. But this Spring Break, something different happened. I went down with my family and brought five adults who had never...
Hi Reader, Later this month, I'll be pushing off the dock in Tortola for another British Virgin Islands charter. But this trip is a little different. Normally when I head down to the BVI, the "float plan" is more of a suggestion than a plan. If the wind shifts, if someone hears about a great beach bar, or if the anchorage just feels right, we pivot. This time? It's a bit more structured. I'm bringing five adult first-timers along with my two kids (5 and 9), who technically have one charter...
Hi Reader, If you’re spending the night on Tortola before your BVI yacht charter begins the next day, there are a handful of solid hotel options depending on where your boat is departing from and what kind of experience you want before you step aboard. I've stayed personally at each of these, and below are my Tortola hotel recommendations to consider, starting with the most convenient marina-based option and then offering a few more upscale options. The Nanny Cay Hotel, located steps from the...
